Here Eika walks us through the different brush types so you can help which one should be used to brush your dog or cat. Tails Animal Chiropractic Care is located in Fort Collins, Colorado, but Dr Alisha travels to a few locations in Northern Colorado. Chiropractic care, as well as  lasers, acupuncture and other “alternative” therapies are becoming more common for pets. Here we mainly talk about dogs, but these treatments can be used for most household pets. If you are not in Northern Colorado then consider looking for someone local to you that provides these treatments. We no longer have to depend just upon painkillers to keep our animals comfortable as they age.

Welcome to Our Pet Care Tips Series!

Thanks for following our Pet Care Tips Series where each week we talk to an animal expert in our community to get you one tip that every pet lover should know.

Guest of the Week: Claire at Pet Honor Society

Claire was kind enough to join me and discuss the many decisions to can make before your pet passes away.

Tip: Knowledge is power! Learn about the process and your options before your pet passes away.

Claire is uniquely well suited to answering questions about the process. She completed a Pet Loss & Grief Companioning Certification Course in 2017 and started Pet Honor society shortly thereafter. She encourages people to learn as much as possible about your options long before your pet passes away. It is hard to make large decisions in the face of grief, so Claire tells us about some of the choices you can make in advance, like type of cremation, urns and memorial services. She also discusses how to gauge quality of life so you know when it is time.

When you have an aging or ill pet, start preparing.

How to Make Your Own Pill Poppers At Home!

Pill poppers are a fantastic tool that make it much easier for you to pill your dog or cat without a huge hassle. Put the pill inside and feed it like a treat. Other foods things like cheese will fall apart in your hands, but these treats form around the pill and make it hard to separate, so your pet will not just eat around it. However, commercial pill poppers are made with tons of preservatives and only come in a couple flavors, plus they are a little costly. Instead learn how to make your own pill poppers at home!

Advantages of Making Pill Poppers

  • All healthy ingredients that you control
  • Adjust the flavor based on the preferences of your pets
  • Work around any allergies
  • Inexpensive to make a large batch
  • No preservatives

In this video Sue Carroll with Bones du Jour teaches us all how to make pill poppers and even demonstrates how easy it is!

At the end stay for a demonstration on how to make scary Halloween monster dog cookies!

How Do I Keep My Dog’s Teeth Clean?

Welcome to Our Pet Care Tips Series!

Thanks for following our Pet Care Tips Series where each week we talk to an animal expert in our community to get you one tip that every pet lover should know.

Guest of the Week: Dr. Robinson and Mellissa at Family and Friends Veterinary Care!

Dr. Robinson and Mellissa were kind enough to join us and show us how to brush your dog’s teeth! They also discussed the health concerns with poor dental care and extra tools to help keep her teeth clean.

Tip: Brushing your dog’s teeth can save a ton of money and keep her healthy!

Brushing your dog’s teeth can seem like a hassle, but once they get used to it, brushing can be a fast and easy process.

Tip from Liana: I keep my dog’s toothbrush in the bathroom where I can see it. When I am done brushing my teeth in the morning I brush my dog’s teeth right away, so I do not forget later. He often comes and waits for me to brush his teeth because he gets a treat afterwards! This took some time for him to get used to, but once you are in a routine it becomes much easier.

What Training Does Your Dog Need to Take Family Photos?

Welcome to Our Pet Care Tips Series!

Thanks for following our Pet Care Tips Series where each week we talk to an animal expert in our community to get you one tip that every pet lover should know.

Guest of the Week: Monique with Silver Paw Studio!

Monique was kind enough to join us and discuss what training your dog needs in order to get great photos with a professional pet photographer. Many people express concerns that their pets are not well trained or even well behaved, so they hesitate to get good quality family photos taken.

Tip: Dogs do not need any special training to take amazing photos!

Monique talks about the methods she uses to get amazing pictures of dogs and cats no matter how much training they have. Monique even goes to photograph adoptable pets at Animal House Rescue & Grooming and the Fort Collins Cat Rescue, and those pets do not have any training and are in a stressful environment.

Watch the video to learn how she takes the photos and consider scheduling an appointment to get some family photos taken yourself. I take endless photos of my pets but my most treasured pictures are those taken with all of us together.

Is My Dog Acting Spiteful?

Welcome to Our Pet Care Tips Series!

Thanks for following our Pet Care Tips Series where each week we talk to an animal expert in our community to get you one tip that every pet lover should know.

Guest of the Week: Amber with Summit Dog Training

Amber was kind enough to join us to talk about dogs and how their behavior can often be perceived as spiteful.

Tip: Dogs are not acting spiteful – they are responding to enforcers in their environment.

Amber breaks down the difference in thinking and how humans perceive dog behavior. Spite is a human emotion and often we believe a dog is acting out of the same feeling. If we view dogs as virtuous beings (think Lassie) then they also must have negative human emotions like meanness and spite. In this case, we view our dogs as humans (which they are not). The more scientific way to view dog behavior is to recognize that there are positive and negative reinforcers and punishers in their environment that lead them to act the way they do.

Real world example: A dog peeing in the house

Your dog is peeing in the house instead of outside. Instead of believing your dog is acting out of spite, you realize she has had a multitude of reinforcers that have caused her to pee in the house. Look at the environment. When house training your dog may have learned that peeing in front of a person is scary, so she goes behind the couch instead, which feels safe. Plus peeing is a positive reinforcement itself, since it feels good to relieve herself.

Watch the video to see Amber explain this beautifully!

Take Amazing Pet Photos With Your Phone

As pet sitters we love taking amazing pictures of our canine and feline friends (check them out over on Instagram), but it has to be fast and easy. After all, we are there to spend time with your pets, not just photograph them. Plus they get super impatient with us if we take too long! So I was really excited when I heard about a class being hosted by Claire with Pet Honor Society. The presentation, Pet Photos in a Snap, was given by Monique with Silver Paw Studio, based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Monique is an amazing pet photographer and both ladies allowed me to film the presentation. It was such a great time and I learned a ton!

Watch the video to get some great tips on how to take beautiful photos of your pets with your regular old cell phone. Some of her tips include:

  • Camera basics
  • Hacks for pet specific pictures
  • Easy lighting adjustments based on your pet’s coloring
  • Exposure levels

If you love this be sure to take a look at future classes being held by Claire. You can find her upcoming events on Facebook. I will also be there filming, so come down and visit with me or subscribe to our email newsletter to make sure you see future videos!

What Does Dog Walking Insurance Cover?

Have you ever wondered what would happen if your dog got hurt during a visit with your dog walker? Well, that is exactly why dog walking insurance was created. Today we’re going over what it covers and why you need to make sure that your dog walker has it.

Dog walking insurance covers the client and their pet’s while in the care of a dog walker.

  • If your dog somehow gets out and makes a mad dash into traffic and gets hurt, your covered.
  • Any injuries to others they may happen while your dog is with your dog walker. For example, a child runs up to your dog and scares them, causing the child to get bit, the insurance will cover those medical expenses.
  • If the dog walker feeds them food or exposes them to something that they are allergic to and they have to go to the vet for care, your dog is covered for that as well.

What dog walking insurance doesn’t cover is the dog walker themselves.

They need to be covered by worker’s compensation insurance. This will cover them in case your dog walker or pet sitter is injured at your property. This can include instances such as:

  • They slip on ice, fall down the stairs, or otherwise get hurt while at your house
  • For some reason your feels afraid or threatened and the pet sitter gets bitten

Dog walking insurance won’t cover them if they get injured. And if their own insurance won’t cover their care, then it’s possible that they may try to get your homeowner’s insurance to cover their injuries. That’s why it is important to make sure that your dog walker or pet sitter is also covered by worker’s comp.

Are Wet Nose Pet Sitters Insured?

We sure are! All of our sitters are covered by our bonding and insurance. We are bonded and insured by the Business Insurers of the Carolinas. And if we’d be happy to provide proof of this upon request. We are also proud members of the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters and Pet Sitters International. We have employees (versus independent contractors) so we are also covered by worker’s compensation.

As always, if you have any questions or want to book services, don’t hesitate to contact us!
