How to Choose the Right Toys for Your Dog

With the holidays approaching it’s important to choose the right toys for your dog when picking out presents. This information applies year-round (since do we really need a specific reason to buy our dogs toys?) but if a family member or friend buys your dog a toy it’s good to know if that toy is right for your dog or if you should keep it out of their toy bin.

Watch the video below to learn more or continue reading.

Most importantly, dog toys should be safe, fun, and durable.

Toys to Avoid

Thankfully most toys that are made for dogs don’t include these elements but some slip through the cracks.

  • Sharp
  • Pointy
  • Is a string – rubber bands, ribbons, etc.
  • Kids toys that contain small parts
  • Pantyhose
  • Anything that could be easily swallowed and digested

If you find your dog playing with any of these things, take them away immediately. If you suspect your dog has ingested the toy call your veterinarian immediately. Toys that are sharp, string and string-like, and choking hazards can all be fatal even if not apparent right away. Intestinal blockages typically require surgery and sharp objects can tear the esophagus, stomach, or digestive track.

Now, onto picking the right toy for your dog!

Size

Toys should be just big enough for your dog to carry, not small enough for them to swallow. A good rule of thumb is if it is smaller than their snout/muzzle – the protruding portion of an animal’s face, consisting of its nose, mouth, and jaw length[1] – they can potentially swallow it.

Play-style

How rough is your dog with their toys? Are they gentle and carry them around like a baby doll or do they prefer to destroy them before they even hit the ground? If your dog is more gentle you may be able to get away with giving them soft toys with squeakers such as Fluff n Tuff that aren’t marketed as extremely durable. For dogs that like to be rough, toys like KONG or Tuffy Dog Toys may be a better option as they are made for rough play. By no means are those the only dog toy brands out there. Shop around to find ones that suit your dogs play-style and preferred material/texture.

Is it edible?

This might be a weird one but we feel it’s important to touch on it. Some pet owners consider various chews to be toys. While not technically a toy if you or someone else buys your dog a chew the same rule of size and play-style apply.

If your dog is given something like a bully stick, it is important to take it away from them once it becomes the same length as their snout/muzzle or smaller. If your dog is really rough and doesn’t like to take their time on chews, it’s important to take it away from them before they finish the whole thing and get a belly ache.

With the holiday season many pet stores still promote and sell rawhide. Rawhide can be dangerous. If you dog swallows a large enough piece it can cause an obstruction which may require surgery, just as if they ate some string. Rawhide should always be given with supervision, if at all. If you are considering purchasing rawhide for a friends pet or your own, consider a safer and more easily digestible alternative such a No-Hide.

The same rules apple. Smaller than the snout/muzzle – throw it out. Monitor consumption to avoid belly aches.

Material

The material you choose will depend on your dogs play-style. You know your dog best.

For high energy dogs, toys that are made of hard rubber, KONG or RuffDawg, toys that are marketed for active/rough on toys dogs. Tug toys, such as the Super Tug are great when you are engaging in supervised play with your dog. Rope toys can easily be shredded and swallow bits of the rope, especially if left unsupervised. Finding tug toys made out of hard rubber is a bit of a challenge but there are toys out there. Tennis balls can be a great toy. If your dog likes to eat the outsides of them then this material may not be the ideal one for your dog.

For lower energy dogs, soft and plush toys may be ideal for them. There are countless brands of soft toys. Be sure to take a look at the toy aisle next time you’re at the pet store. If you are worried about stuffing there are brands out there that make stuffing free toys such as Outward Hound. Even if your dog is low energy they may still like to play with toys that are designed for high energy dogs.

Mental Stimulation

For high energy dogs or dogs that may be left alone part of the day, mental stimulation may be an important factor for you. Tennis balls are fun, but they don’t provide much enrichment and stimulation. Those pet parents looking for mentally stimulating toys should check out our blog on interactive puzzle games for cats and dogs.

Rotate Dog Toys

Okay this is a bit of cheating but it works! Why bother buying more toys when you already have the right toys for your dog? If your dog is getting tired of the same toys consider swapping them out for some other ones you have. Often times, pet owners keep all of their pets toys out at once. You should only keep around 4-5 toys out at a time and rotate between sets frequently. This keeps the novelty of the toys and keeps your dog excited. An added bonus is toys won’t wear out as fast and you save money by not having to buy new toys constantly.

You picked out a toy. Now what?

Test it out! Whenever you are giving your dog a new toy make sure to supervise them. This supervision ensures you know how your dog interacts with that toy.

Congratulations!

You have successfully picked out the right toys for your dog! It’s a bit of a challenge, we know, but the reward is worth it. Nothing beats watching a happy dog play.

How to Clean Your Pets Toys and Keep Them Looking New

Learning how to clean your pets toys is an essential skill every pet parent should have. Keeping your pets toys clean helps prevent illness in not only your pet but you as well. Who knows where that ball has been! It also can be a great way to get your pets excited about a toy again and helps to reduce wear and tear on toys.

While you’re at it, check out our blog on Interactive Puzzle Games for Cats and Dogs. Everybody knows our pets can never have too many toys.

But how do you clean your pets toys?

Use a natural sanitizing solution

The first thing you might reach for is dish detergent but wait! These types of products can leave residues that can be harmful if ingested. Using a solution of vinegar and water might not taste the best when your pet puts it in their mouth but it will be a solution that will not be harmful if any residue is ingested.

Machine-wash or hand-wash soft toys

Soft toys can become damaged if washed too roughly or even shrink if dried improperly! If your pet has a very dear soft toy this toy should be hand-washed to ensure it doesn’t shrink, seams don’t break, and stuffing doesn’t come out. Toys that your pet cares less about that are soft may be safe to machine-wash in a dedicates bag.

If you’re unsure it’s best to hand-wash. I’ve never had trouble with any of my pets larger soft toys. Smaller ones I usually hand wash as I don’t want them to end up in the “sock dimension”.

Spend more time cleaning those outdoor toys

Toys that have been outdoors have the potential to be covered in more germs that come from more sources. If your pet leaves their toys scattered in the yard, you don’t know who or what has potentially played with them overnight.

Rotate toys

Rotating toys is a great way to help keep your pets toys in better condition since they aren’t being played with every day. Rotating is also a great way to act as if the toy is new – especially toys that usually sit in the bottom of the bin.

Be excited when returning the toy

Treating an old toy like it’s a new one is a great way to encourage pets to play with their older toys. Just like with kids, they usually are much more interested in the newest toy they have been given and can use some encouragement to play with their older toys.

and finally…

Clean the toy bin

When was the last time you cleaned your pets toy bin? Not just the toys?

Review: Chuckit! Toys – Durable for Your Dog

If you have a dog who loves to play then you have probably seen the Chuckit! brand dog toys. Today we have a review of three of the common Chuckit! toys so you can either watch the video below or read on for details!

ChuckItChuckit! Launcher

The Chuckit! Launcher is the ball launcher you see out at all the dog parks. It comes in 4 different sizes and it can range anywhere from $8-20 depending on what size you get. You can use any tennis ball but Chuckit! has their down regular and rubber balls. The rubber ball is super durable and much harder to puncture. The felt ball is pretty good for indoor or dry conditions outside, but if it is muddy then it is better to go with the rubber ball since you can rinse it off right after. No matter which ball you use, the Launchers will save your arm and help burn off that extra dog energy!

chuckitChuckit! Zipflight

This is the Zipflight frisbee. It comes in regular and glow-in-the-dark versions for night play. The Zipflight ranges from $10-15 depending on if you get the small or the large size. It is super durable because it is  a rubber and canvas material. And, the best part about this one is it goes super high, super far, and my dog hasn’t been able to destroy it so far!

ChuckItChuckit! Kick Fetch

The other toy I have is the Chuckit! Kick Fetch ball. It comes in two sizes, small or large, and my dog is a pretty big shepherd mix so I have the large one for him. This one is really cool if you want to play basically kickball or soccer with your dog. My dog loves soccer but he destroys every soccer ball that he ever touches so he just likes to play too rough, but this thing is super durable.

The little blue parts are rubber and the orange is canvas material. It basically  the size of a soccer ball and you can kick it around outside or in the house and hopefully your dog doesn’t destroy it right away. This is really cool, just kick it with your feet, you don’t have to touch it, just like the other Chuckit! toys. Plus, the Kick Fetch ball is about $25-30 depending on if you get the small or the large one.

What’s great about the Launcher and Kick Fetch ball is that you never have to touch a slimy, dirty ball. All you have to do is  just pick it right up with the Launcher and throw it or kick it around. If you haven’t tried any of these balls or toys, even the frisbee, I recommend you give them a shot.

They may be a little bit pricier, but they are super durable and they will last a long time. It is well worth the extra money. If you have a super rowdy dog and you want to try out a couple different toys, I would recommend going for the Chuckit! brand toys, whether is it the Kick Fetch, the Zipflight frisbee or the Chuckit! Launcher.

Have fun playing with your dog!

If you live in Fort Collins or Loveland, Colorado, you can go to Poudre Pet & Feed Supply or Hank’s Pet Food Market to get your toys!
